The Vision of the Family Crisis Center, Inc. is a community free from domestic and sexual violence, abuse and neglect.  The mission of the Domestic and Sexual Violence Center (DSVC): Providing survivors of domestic and sexual violence, their families and friends, advocacy and services while encouraging social change through awareness, education, and prevention.  The mission of the Dell Hayden Memorial Child Advocacy Center (CAC):Providing victims of child abuse and their families a multidisciplinary response, advocacy and support to reduce trauma and hold perpetrators accountable while creating a safer community through awareness, education, and prevention.

MOCSA’s service area includes seven counties in the bi-state Kansas City metropolitan area: Jackson, Platte Clay and Cass Counties in Missouri, and Johnson, Wyandotte and Miami Counties in Kansas.  Our 24-hour crisis line, sexual assault counseling, adult survivor counseling, and hospital advocacy services are available to resident across all seven counties in our service area. Services for child sexual abuse and their families are available for Missouri residents.  In addition to services provided at our primary office location in midtown Kansas City, Missouri, we provide outreach counseling for adolescent and adult sexual assault victims in Overland Park, Kansas City, KS, Olathe, and Paola.  MOCSA’s education programs for middle and high school students are available in more than 30 school districts throughout our services area. Project Aware, MOCSA’s education program for students pre-k through 5th grade, is available in elementary schools in Missouri.

Victims should be treated with courtesy, compassion, and with respect for their dignity and privacy and should suffer the minimum of necessary inconvenience from their involvement with the criminal justice system. Victims should receive, through formal and informal procedures, prompt and fair redress for the harm which they have suffered. Information regarding the availability of criminal restitution, recovery of damages in a civil cause of action, the crime victims compensation fund and other remedies and the mechanisms to obtain such remedies should be made available to victims. Information should be made available to victims about their participation in criminal proceedings and the scheduling, progress and ultimate disposition of the proceedings. The views and concerns of victims should be ascertained and the appropriate assistance provided throughout the criminal process. When the personal interests of victims are affected, the views or concerns of the victim should, when appropriate and consistent with criminal law and procedure, be brought to the attention of the court. Measures may be taken when necessary to provide for the safety of victims and their families and to protect them from intimidation and retaliation. Enhanced training should be made available to sensitize criminal justice personnel to the needs and concerns of victims and guidelines should be developed for this purpose. Victims should be informed of the availability of health and social services and other relevant assistance that they might continue to receive the necessary medical, psychological and social assistance through existing programs and services. Victims should report the crime and cooperate with law enforcement authorities.

Victim Assistance Program - Kansas State

The advocates in the Victim Assistance Program treat all victims of crime with compassion and respect for their dignity and privacy as together we walk through the processes of the Criminal Justice System. Victims’ rights to participation in criminal proceedings are ensured by timely notification and appropriate assistance so that they may be safe and protected from intimidation and retaliation, and assisted to obtain restitution, Crime Victims Compensation, and other services available in the community. It is the right of the victim of a crime to be informed about the progress of the case. The Victim Assistance Unit notifies victims when charges have been filed in all cases in the adult and juvenile courts. Notification is done with an initial packet including a letter, booklet and Victim Impact Statement form. Victims are also notified of arraignment hearings, preliminary hearings, trials and sentencing hearings.
